Alexis & Greg’s Wedding – Jackson Square & Pharmacy Museum, New Orleans – 10/27/07

Alexis and Greg are in the motion picture profession, and Greg’s particular occupation, location scout, was readily apparent when we met for the first time several months ago… he pulled his notebook for the reception venue, which included detailed diagrams, notes, and photos from every conceivable angle.

Another indication was their use of the term “magic hour” in the context of discussing what time the ceremony would take place. And indeed, the lighting was absolutely splendid. We had a few minutes before the ceremony to get some shots of the couple around the French Quarter, and then after they exchanged vows in Jackson Square, the Hot Eight Brass Band led us towards the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum where the reception was to be held.

We hadn’t gone far when a police officer approached the couple, bringing the procession to a screeching halt. Apparently a parade permit is required for this type of thing, and it appeared that we were to be forced to disband. Fortunately, Greg was able to convince the officer to let us continue after pointing out that our destination was only 2 blocks away.

The reception had a masquerade theme, and Alexis & Greg provided all the guests with wonderful masks.

Tonya & Billy’s Wedding – Elms Mansion, New Orleans – 10/26/07

This Florida couple’s wedding and reception were at the beautiful Elms Mansion on St. Charles Ave. Being big fans of The Princess Bride, (one of the best movies ever made!), they had the jazz band play the movie’s theme song (Mark Knopfler’s Storybook Love) for the processional. And as if that weren’t enough, the minister began the ceremony with “Mawidge…mawidge is what bwings us togewer today”, an impersonation of the movie’s speech-impaired clergyman, which got a big laugh from all the guests!

Catherine & Calvin’s Wedding – Tree of Life & Orleans Club, New Orleans – 10/20/07

Catherine and Calvin’s wedding ceremony was about as unconventional as it could be! With absolutely perfect weather, the wedding took place at the Tree of Life in Audubon Park. The tree, a live oak, was planted during the wedding of New Orleans Mayor Jean Etienne de Bore over 200 years ago. The tree is massive, with the large root system making an ideal “stage” for the couple to stand on. And yes, those are shrimping boots that the bride and groom are wearing… there’s a long story behind that, which is too lengthy to post here, but suffice it to say that the boots have special meaning to the couple, dating back to their childhood. Catherine is a documentary filmmaker, and had three cameramen, including one with a steadycam rig, filming the event for an autobiographical documentary she is producing.

The reception was at the Orleans Club, and New Orleans legend Kermit Ruffins and his band entertained! At the end of the memorable night, Kermit led a second line march out to a waiting motorized rickshaw, in which the couple was whisked away.
